Malin Kundang (Indonesian Folktale)

Malin Kundang was a poor boy from West Sumatra. He lived with his mother Mande Rubiah. His mother loved him very much. When he was fifteen years old, he asked his mother for permission to work on a ship. He sailed abroad for many years but never sent any news to his mother. His mother longed for him.
He worked very hard so that he became a successful man. He was very rich and he had his own ship. Because of his wealth he became proud and arrogant. He event forgot his mother. When his mother wanted to see him, he did not want to admit that she was his mother. He scolded her and asked her to go away. His mother was very sad. She sprayed for God to punish him.
When the ship left the harbor, a strong wind blew violently. It made the ship sink. Malin Kundang and his guards were drowned and suddenly the ship turned into a great stone. Now people can see the stone when they come to the beach near Padang.
